Do You Speak My Language?

Or, just because it doesn’t come from an official UA team doesn’t mean that it isn’t good and worth your time.

1-Minute (or Less) Summary

There are lots of really good sources of learning about Oracle, and many of them are not produced by any of the official Oracle User Assistance (UA) teams. Heretical, I know! But really, you should check them out.

The Whole Story

Seriously! There is lots of really good materials that fall into the UA category (at least as I broadly define it), and those materials are not produced by any official Oracle UA team. I know it seems heretical for a UA guy, in fact THE UA Guy, to be referencing stuff that is not produced by a UA team (especially his own.)

And! I am not talking about marketing materials. Those are different. They are all about awareness and brand. But sometimes, you need to understanding something better than you currently do, and UA materials are where you should turn. And! If we are being honest, the marketing materials just aren’t up to those demands for more depth. (NOTE: They shouldn’t be either.)

What you sometimes need are materials that speak in a broad language to everyone. Seriously! Like 37 people in the entire world really understand cosmology and all its equations. Stephen Hawking wrote the excellent, A Brief History of Time, that explained it to the rest of us. And many times, there might only be 37 people who really understand, or need to understand, the inner workings of the Oracle Database. BUT! It doesn’t mean that there isn’t a need to express deep concepts in a clear and concise manner that everyone can understand. In other words, you need the UA to speak your language (or help you speak in a language your leadership and users can understand).

To give you a taste of what is out there, I reference two videos by Paul Sonderegger (Oracle’s Sr. Data Strategist) produced by Lauren Cohn (Oracle’s Multimedia Architect) that highlight the value of story.

Now, the Data Capital series is just starting. But, from behind the scenes, this is going to be one that you watch, re-watch, and reference for others to do that same. Seriously! It is that good.

You can thank me later for the inside scoop. Now! Stop reading this blog! OR!! WAIT! Finish reading this blog. Refer the blog to 9.7 other people, and THEN go watch those videos. WHEEW! Gotta keep those hit counts up. I’m running out of family members and friends to elevate my counts. LOL!
